SEPTEMBER 16, 2024 ANNOUNCEMENT/UPDATE
From 2014 to 2016, the Duel Commander Committee has created a structured internal organization, with 4 different roles, designed to better adapt to its needs. This structure has thrived, until now.
We decided it is now the time for us to change how we are structured, once again. Even though these changes are purely internal, we still think it is a good idea to publicly disclose to all of you how we work, who is part of the Committee and what the different positions are, whether they're set, hypothetical, or currently subject to recruiting.
CHANGES:
🔘 GLOBAL GAME RULES CHANGES
No changes.
🔘INDIVIDUAL BANNED AND RESTRICTED CARD CHANGES
No changes.
🔘 EXPERIMENTAL CHANGES
No changes.
🔘 OTHER CHANGES
The Duel Commander Committee now follows a new, "2024+" organization chart.
👉 Don’t forget to check out our Comprehensive Rules page for detailed understanding of Duel Commander rules.
👉 Don’t forget to check out our Banned and Restricted page for a recap of all the currently banned/restricted cards.
👉 Don’t forget to check out our About Us page for a recap of how we work, and how to keep in touch with Duel Commander.
You can still contact us on our Facebook Page page and our Discord server.
The next scheduled announcement will be published on September 30, 2024.
Until then, we wish you all many good games! 😇
FURTHER EXPLANATIONS
Back somewhere around 2015, we restructured the whole Committee, out from scratch and from the ashes of former, improvised forms. Long gone is the time this Committee was only made from a small handful of people, followed by hundreds of players, barely leaving kitchen and living-room tables. To this day, we reached a peak total of 20 simultaneously active people, 18 as of the time this text is written.
Today we estimate (see our 2024 panel for more details about these points):
The number of people playing Duel Commander around the world, regardless of the intensity of their activity, to be over 100,000
The number of significantly reported tournament results of MTGTop8, for instance, to be over 6500 by the end of this year 2024
The number of countries significantly showing Duel Commander activity to be over 20
The number of unique visitors per year to be over 150,000 on our website only, totally over 500,000 unique page views
A yearly growth of around 5% of all this activity.
We then created different roles to better reflect what we thought would fit our needs. It turns out this structure experiment was a good idea, and fitted reality until now.
Even though the current structure would still work as is for some time, we decided to change the structure to better reflect:
the expansion of Duel Commander around the world: we literally discover a new country playing Duel Commander every month
the diminishing relative part of France among the countries where things happen, despite the absolute gross popularity there: tournaments, people getting involved, judges, players…
the growing importance of social networks, and the time, that now has come, to expand our presence and visibility
the fact that Magic The Gathering Online has entered the game two months ago, and is now part of the equation
the now smaller ongoing needs for rules tracking
the work done over these 10 years to overcome diplomatic difficulties, human problems, or technical challenges.
You will find below our new structure.
What you can find in this structure, as we thought and validated it:
A design of the Committee, made from:
The Core Team, more or less as you know it, who will decide how everything is handled.
Also, the Extended Team, all members of the Committee, which will consists of:
The Internationalization team: a vastly expanded team of Regional Coordinators, from a list that is expected to grow rapidly, with the same expected role as the current one
A new, internal Social Media & Content Curation team that will be part of the Committee and assist in creating discussions and content
Rules Guidance: a restricted yet still needed rules advisory position to better ensure strict, comprehensive rules and judge coordination
And finally, a selected list of trusted, external partners and people, who will not be considered to be a part of the Committee, but who will work hand to hand with it:
A Discord Support Team, which will assist in mandatory activities from our everyday lives on Discord
An Events Team, which will ensure coordination with Tournament Organizers and help assist promoting the largest tournaments
A Facebook Support Team, to ensure our legacy media still works.
The mentioned presence of official relations with Magic The Gathering, here through the presence of Daybreak™ Daybreak Games™ for Magic The Gathering Online™.
This means that, in short, there are 6 cases in which concerned people will fall:
people who will stay and have their respective titles changed (Brennan McAlear, William Pinaud, and our Discord team)
people who will stay and keep their current titles (all other Regional Coordinators)
people who will leave the Committee (Advisors, Jordan Raiber)
people who will be recruited with certainty (identified position and role)
people who might be recruited (identified role or position only)
people who might join later on (uncertain role and position).
The recruitment process as presented during our 2024 panel still holds for all new roles.
Everyone in the Core Team unanimously joins to thank: Damien Jantzen, Jordan Raiber, Manuel Le Marec, Martin Cuchet, Pierre-Guillaume Bardin and Thomas Mechin, for all your time, involvement and sympathy over these years. We hope we can all stay in touch and see each other on greater and better events every year! 🫶
